The Snowman Who Stands on His Own Two Feet

My freestanding crochet snowman needs no tree and no hooks — he just stands. Meet the sturdiest character in the Christmas batch.

The Snowman Who Stands on His Own Two Feet

Some decorations need a tree, a hook, a stand and a small negotiation with gravity. My snowman is not one of them. He simply stands — on a shelf, on the mantelpiece, on the windowsill, anywhere that needs a cheerful face and a bit of homemade Christmas spirit.

He is crocheted entirely from 100% cotton yarn, which means he holds his shape properly: no slumping by the second week of December, no sad leaning. He has a classic black top hat trimmed with holly and berries, a carroty nose, button eyes and a line of little black pom poms down his front, like the buttons of a well-worn winter coat.

At £10 he is one of the bigger characters in the shop, and he earns it — he is solid, he stands about a hand's height, and he photographs beautifully next to fairy lights. I know because he spent a whole afternoon posing in the woods for his portraits.

He is happiest as part of a little scene: propped beside the tree, keeping watch over the wrapped presents, or paired with one of my snowman tree ornaments hanging just above him, so the little one dangles while the big one stands guard. Between them they make a proper snowman family.

You can find him here in the online shop. Like everything I make, each one is worked by hand in my Devon craft room, and once this batch is gone, it is gone. Thank you for reading the journal!
