Wreath Season Begins — Satin, Tartan and a Lot of Pins

Alongside the baubles and the fabric trees, the next thing building in the craft room is wreath season. There is something about making a wreath that feels properly ceremonial — the point at which I stop pretending I am making things for December and admit that it is nearly November.

The wreath you can see above is 25cm wide, made from rich emerald green satin ribbon and classic red and green tartan, woven in a pattern that repeats around the ring to form a star motif across the whole design. Woven ribbon wreaths take real patience — the ribbon is folded and pinned just like the baubles, but over a curved ring shape so the star repeats evenly all the way round. The result is something with real presence indoors: lovely on an internal door, over a fireplace, or framed on a wall.

Next to it in the shop is a padded fabric wreath (product 63), made from alternating sections of deep green and cream holly and berry print fabric, each one softly padded so the finished design is beautifully plump. It is finished with a gathered fabric rosette at the base, is nice and light to hang, and settles happily on a door, wall, fireplace or staircase.

A note from experience: because these are ribbon and fabric, they are happiest indoors or in a very sheltered porch. Devon rain and festive ribbon are not friends.
